The Use of Ubiquitous Learning Methods for Mathematics Courses in Borough of Manhattan Community College: A Case Study
The goal of this project was to study the application of e-textbooks integrated with an electronic learning support system in mathematics courses. This paper reports the results of the study undertaken to identify critical issues pertaining to the use of e-textbooks for learning and teaching mathematics courses as an ubiquitous learning method. Participating students were enrolled either in an introductory statistics course or service math course for elementary school teachers. Students used one of the three learning media methods, which consisted of a conventional textbook, an e-textbook with an integrated learning support system and a bundled textbook. A combination of experimental methods and descriptive methods of research were used. Pre and post test survey questionnaires, a follow-up focus group study and an interview with the math instructor at the end of the semester were conducted to discover the answers to the research questions of this study. The research findings indicated that using math e-textbooks integrated with an electronic learning support system was effective.

Dr. Kanu A. Nagra is Assistant Professor and Electronic Resources Librarian at the Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY library. She is author of the book University Library System: Centralization and Decentralization (Regal Publication, 2008) and of several research articles on online tutorials, e-metrics, e-books and university library systems. She is a member of the ALA, ALCTS, NYLA and LACUNY. Her current areas of interest are E-books, online teaching learning methods and designing instructional tools for enhanced learning.

Professor Sidney Eng is currently Chief Librarian at Borough of Manhattan Community College (City University of New York) and has been in that position for seventeen years. In addition to college and university libraries, he has worked in a public library, high school library and at an opinion magazine. His interest has always been in finding ways to leverage technology to deliver information services. He holds a BA (sociology) from Bishop’s University, Quebec, Canada, an MA (sociology) New York University, and MLS from St. John’s University, New York. He began a sabbatical leave in September 2012 to conduct further research on managing library technologies.

Dr. Margaret Karrass has over twenty years of teaching experience. She taught high school Mathematics and Computer Science, developed curricular materials, worked as a Mathematics coach for the New York City Department of Education, taught at Rutgers University as an adjunct, and for the past six years has been teaching Mathematics and Statistics at BMCC CUNY. Her research interests include diagrammatic reasoning and geometric knowledge, teachers’ content knowledge for teaching, and teaching and learning with digital media. She holds Hon. B.A. and M.A. degrees in Mathematics from York University, Toronto; B.Ed. from University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York. Dr. Karrass is a passionate advocate for the enrichment of Mathematics curriculum in teacher education.
